It’s no secret that the wellness industry is booming right now, evidenced by the sheer volume of supplements lining the shelves at local drugstores. With tons to choose from, and TikTokers telling us what to buy, it can be overwhelming, to say the very least. There are ashwagandha capsules to help you unwind, gummies that look and taste like peach rings claiming to help with digestion, and green powders that purportedly quell bloating. Where to turn? Let’s start with the basics.

As a reminder, a supplement is – as its name implies – meant to supplement nutrient gaps in your diet, not to replace food, health writer and dietitian Johna Burdeos, RD, tells POPSUGAR. That said, she advises you speak with your doctor if you think you have a deficiency. They’ll be able to expertly recommend your ideal match, considering your health conditions and medications. Likewise, dietitian Taelor Guzmán, RDN, recommends preparing for your conversation with your chosen healthcare professional “by coming up with a list of primary concerns and a run-through of your activity and nutrition patterns.”
