If you talked to me about meditation last year, I would have rolled my eyes. Sitting in stillness has never been my strong suit, which has led to a lot of uncomfortable yoga classes in my life. Savasana always felt awkward to me; I would lay there fidgeting while my mind raced to all the things I needed to do once class was over.

One day it changed. While I was more open to the experience, my teacher was also very simplistic in her approach – much like this teaching from yoga teacher Rachel Brathen. “Starting every day with a seated meditation is a beautiful way to set your intentions for the day ahead,” writes Rachel. “Bring a cup of tea. Sit in silence. Breathe deeply. Set the tone for what you want yo [sic] create! . . . You have everything you need to make this day special.”
I found meditation daunting because I found myself overthinking it when, in reality, it can be a simple – and short – practice. These days, I start every morning much like Rachel’s suggestion. I have a glass of tea while clearing my mind, focusing on my breath, and setting an intention for a good day. If my mind starts to wander, I simply hone in on my breath again. This simple five-minute ritual has helped me feel less stressed, and more excited about the day ahead of me.
